    Pascal Josèphe

    President and Founder of IMCA

I founded and manage IMCA with certain watchwords in mind: transmission, support, and creativity.

I’m a journalist by profession, and I graduated from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Strasbourg and the Ecole Supérieure de Journalisme in Lille. I worked as a local journalist (Nord Éclair, a daily newspaper published in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France), and then in institutional communication (as Information Manager for the city of Lille from 1978 to 1982). After organizing the very memorable 50th anniversary celebrations of Lille’s belfry in 1982, I became the official representative of Hervé Bourges, the former director of my school of journalism, who’d become Managing Director of Radio France Internationale in March 1983. The following summer he was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of TF1 and I assisted him as private secretary. Together we discovered the world of television and rescued this small company, which was suffering from a lack of editorial direction and low audience figures. In 1984, Hervé Bourges appointed me as General Secretary of the presidency and the channel’s programming manager. It was during this period that I acquired my knowledge of television.

Several months after the channel was privatized, in August 1987, I was recruited by a headhunter from the group that later became Carat, a leading advertising space buying company, which was then managed by Gilbert and Francis Gross. I was responsible for developing television expertise for telecasters and operators in the sector—broadcasters, producers, and institutions.

In November 1990, Jean-Luc Lagardère took over La Cinq (France’s first free private TV channel), an ailing channel that he wanted to rescue. Despite my misgivings and much hesitation, I finally decided to go for it and I joined him. But the channel wasn’t doing at all well and stopped broadcasting at the beginning of 1992.

Hervé Bourges had in the meantime continued his career (at RMC, a French radio station, and Sofirad, a French company that manages State shares in TV and radio), and was then appointed CEO of Antenne 2 and FR3 in 1991. I had just joined La Cinq. In the spring of 1992 he asked me to work with him as advisor and Assistant Managing Director of Antenne 2 and 3, which became France 2 and France 3 in September of that year. Together we overhauled the tarnished image of the two channels with low audience figures, whose market share grew from 21.5 to 25% (for France 2) and 13 to 15% (France 3). At the end of 1993, Hervé Bourges didn’t seek re-election, and in April 1994 I created IMCA, filling a gap in the specialist consulting market.

I now have the satisfaction of managing the entire team of this small but very resourceful and talented company and assisting many companies in the media and communication sectors. This site tells you about IMCA’s history and expertise.

    Assistant to the Managing Director

I’m a digital native and I’m known as the company geek at IMCA: I'm immersed in new technologies and I love playing video games.

I’ve been Pascal Josèphe’s assistant since August 2008, a post that requires me to be organized, reactive, and meticulous. It’s a job that requires real precision. I handle phone calls and reply to any e-mails; I manage current activities and deal with any external requests addressed to Pascal and his colleagues.

In 2005, I got the chance to work in Morocco as part of a Volontariat International en Entreprise (international business programme) for IMFA, a training company that specializes in the media, where I worked with the biggest media companies in Morocco.

Being particularly interested in media content, new forms of audiovisual writing, and particularly production techniques, I then got a job working behind the scenes in television as a production coordinator for MATV, a subsidiary of the SAGA Communication Group.

When I returned to France, I held the post of general manager for PAF productions working on the French TV talk show T’empêches tout le monde de dormir, presented by Marc Olivier Fogiel. During this time, I also participated in post-production work for ‘fiction’ projects for the Marathon Group.

I believe this period of technological change provides exceptional opportunities and that the tools for observing behaviour and attitudes need to be reviewed, and we need to find new ways to communicate and create content. Having held various posts in this sector, I’m now lucky to be in a unique position that allows me to observe, analyze, make recommendations, and even provide training, and thereby actively participate in the big shift to digital technology.

I’ve been Managing Partner at IMCA since 2008, prior to which I spent many years working in media market research, where I participated in the development of model audience measurement tools used in France (IFOP, Médiamétrie, and MOS). I’ve also spent time working ‘on the other side’ in the media: first as manager of the Marketing and Research Department of Groupe Europe1 Communication (Europe 1, Europe 2, audiovisual centre, and advertising agencies) and then as head of the French music radio station RFM.

I’m a sports enthusiast, and between 1989 and 2003 I held various managerial positions in press and publishing groups.

I used to be a TV addict and now I’ve swapped my couch for a Smartphone, a portable computer and an Ipad. My life’s now become completely digital !

I grew up with Les Cités d’Or (French-Japanese animated series), the American adventure series MacGyver, and Marc Toesca (French TV and radio presenter), and my interest in the media led me to work on the launch of an Internet portal at Bayard Presse, and then for the French Prime Minister at the Direction du Développement des médias (Media Development Department). Shortly after I graduated with a Master in media studies from ESCP (international business school) and a DESS in Droit de l’internet (Internet law) from the Pantheon-Assas Paris II University, I continued my career at M6 where I became involved in production and handled the monitoring and development of programmes.

I’ve worked at IMCA since 2008, and I keep track of, analyze, decode, and work with: programme schedules, formats, audiences, programmes, projects, new scripts, and new formats. I work on all fronts with every type of medium—and I find that really stimulating !

I have been immersed in the world of media and telecommunications technology ever since I qualified as an engineer. As someone who’s actively participating in the digital revolution, I’m privileged to live in an era when technological developments are keeping pace with demand, and today there are boundless options for the creative potential for technologies, content and media applications.

I graduated in engineering from the Ecole Polytechnique (X68) and Telecom Paris Tech (ENST 73), and I’ve worked as a technical and HR executive in companies such as Radio France, Sofratev, and TéléDiffusion de France. As technical and IT Director (1990–2000), I initiated the shift to digital for RFO’s (French overseas network) production and programmes. In 1997, I developed a powerful and innovative system for recording and diffusing radio and television using computer servers—I was awarded two ‘Technology Awards’ during the International Broadcasting Convention.

I’ve been a consultant since June 2000, and I joined IMCA in 2001. I’m responsible for every aspect of the audiovisual process (studios, newsrooms, publications, diffusion, networks, etc.). I conduct research and technical and organizational audits, and I collaborate with my IMCA colleagues on research into areas where technologies, content, and practices converge (mobility, hybrid television, and so on.).

Lastly, I run the digital technology training courses, both for the engineers and the non-specialist staff.

My entire career has been ‘screen’ orientated: I've spent 25 years in the TV sector, with some time spent in video publishing. Over the last few years at IMCA screens have gone digital.

After graduating from the EM Lyon business school in 1977, I began my career working in international sales at Télécip, which was the leading French TV producer. I then joined Revcom TV, a subsidiary of Editions Mondiales (publishers), where I specialized in the distribution and co-production of youth-orientated fiction.

In 1985, I was recruited by Time Warner as Video Marketing Director. VHS versions of James Bond and Bugs Bunny then became available in supermarkets, and Warner became the market leader. In 1991, the publishing group Média Participations invited me to create and become Managing Director of their audiovisual service (Dargaud Films and Citel Vidéo). When my daughter was born in 1995 I took time off to take care of her.

I have been working regularly for IMCA as a freelancer for the last ten years. I particularly appreciate the company’s high standards, the quality of the staff, and the variety of the missions I undertake: channel launching, marketing issues, programme expertise, and the development of the System of Quality Management in the media.
